KIS MYP study program promotes multilingual education
At Kumamoto International School (KIS), the primary language of instruction in the My Year Programme (MYP) is English, however we promote true multilingualism and value linguistic diversity.In addition to English, we also offer Japanese and Chinese (Mandarin) classes.We provide students with the opportunity to deepen their language proficiency and cultural understanding. Interdisciplinary Learning
We adopt an interdisciplinary approach, where students learn themes that span multiple subjects, understand the connections between different subjects, and gain deeper knowledge. This approach allows students to learn from a broader perspective, without being limited by a specific subject. For example, a social context learned in history class can be used in a narrative analysis in literature class, or a theory learned in science can be applied to a design or technology project. This allows students to relate knowledge from each subject to each other, resulting in more integrated and practical learning, and strengthening students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Interdisciplinary learning also allows students to deepen their understanding of complex real-world problems and develop the ability to tackle problems from multiple perspectives.
MYP Global Context
The MYP at KIS aims to give students a global perspective and deepen their understanding of global issues such as cultural diversity and environmental issues in modern society. By placing a global context at the heart of their studies, students will develop an understanding of different cultures and values and respect for diverse perspectives. This goes beyond simply acquiring knowledge; it also fosters a sense of true international citizenship through empathy and cooperation with others.
In addition, students will develop the ability to critically and creatively address complex issues such as environmental problems, poverty, educational disparities, and conflicts that the world faces. In the MYP, student learning is measured through Criterion-Referenced Assessment and assessed against clear standards.This method ensures that students are assessed based on how well they achieve the standards, rather than relative to others, focusing on progress and growth.

The four criteria for MYP assessment
1. Criterion A: Knowledge and Understanding
- It assesses how well students understand concepts and content in each subject. The standard emphasizes not only basic knowledge but also how they apply that knowledge to solve problems.
2. Application (Criterion B: Investigating, Organizing, or Applying Skills)
- It assesses how you can apply your knowledge and skills to real problems and challenges - it measures how you can use them in new situations, rather than simply reproducing memorized knowledge.
3. Analysis and Critical Thinking (Criterion C: Thinking Critically or Creating Solutions)
- Problem-solving skills, critical thinking and creative solutions are assessed. Students are required to evaluate information and draw logical conclusions.
4. Criterion D: Communication and Collaboration
- We assess students' ability to effectively communicate what they have learned to others and their skills in working collaboratively with others. This is measured through presentations, discussions and teamwork.
- In the MYP,Score 0-8 for each criterionis given through regular tasks, projects, tests and presentations so that students can track their progress and areas for improvement.
