熊本インターナショナルスクールの未来について、うれしいお知らせがあります。この夏の終わりごろ、キャンパスの大規模な拡張工事が始まります。新しい施設は2027年12月の完成を予定しています。
私たちの歩みは、2003年、熊本の中心部でピカソ・プリスクールを開園したことから始まりました。2006年に西原へ移り、この地で学校は基盤を築き、成長していきました。2018年に小学校を開校し、2023年には中学校を開くとともに、現在の戸島キャンパスへと大きく移転しました。2025年には最初の高校生をIBディプロマ・プログラムに迎え、今年の4月には10年生から12年生のための寮を開設しました。その成長の間、変わらなかったことがひとつあります。子どもたちに本物の国際教育を届けたいという思いです。
これらはすべて、保護者の皆さまが寄せてくださった信頼なしには実現しませんでした。私たちが歩んできた一歩一歩は、皆さまがKISを選び、学校の成長を支え続けてくださったからこそ可能でした。心から深く感謝しています。
この年月を通して、施設が私たちの提供できる教育の質に、いかに直接関わっているかを実感してきました。より良い空間は、先生が授業でより多くのことに挑戦することを可能にし、一日一日からより多くのものを引き出してくれます。そして学校の空間が広がるほど、子どもたちのためにできることも増えていきます。戸島への移転の1年後、2024年の夏にアリーナが完成したとき、できることが一気に変わりました。私たちはアリーナの天井を12.5メートルの高さで設計しました。バレーボールのラリーが、ボールが天井に当たって途切れてしまうことのないように、という思いからです。ボールが天井近くまで高く上がっても試合が続いていく——その光景を見るたびに、今でも思わず笑顔になります。冷暖房を備えるという一見ささやかな選択も、大きな意味を持ちました。おかげで天候に関わらず、体育や、保護者・学校行事、大学訪問など、さまざまな用途でこの空間を使えるようになりました。今ではアリーナを毎日のように使っていて、当初は思いもしなかった使い方をすることも少なくありません。今では、アリーナのないKISは想像もできないほどです。
今回の一歩も、KISが子どもたちに提供できるものを、もう一度大きく変えることになります。今はできないことが、できるようになります。まず、毎日校内で調理する温かくできたての給食です。これは、私たちが長い間、子どもたちのために願ってきたことでした。専用のグラウンドや、本格的な試験の環境を想定して設計した試験センターも整います。そして保護者の皆さまにとっても、実用的で確かなメリットがあります。新しい駐車場は国体道路から直接出入りできるようになり、これまでよりもずっとアクセスがしやすくなります。
今回の拡張には、次のものが含まれます。
- より広いキャンパス ― 敷地は合計で約10,000㎡(3,000坪)。学びや活動、これからの成長のためのゆとりが大きく広がります。
- 新しいカフェテリアと校内厨房。毎日、できたての温かいランチを校内で用意できるようになります。
- サッカーや体育、休み時間、外遊びのためのグラウンド。
- 中高生が昼食をとったり、ゆっくり過ごしたりできる屋外スペースの拡充。
- 試験・各種評価のための試験室。
- 国体道路から直接出入りできる駐車場。車の流れと出入りがよりスムーズになります。
- 新校舎と本校舎をつなぐ全天候型の屋内通路。どんな天気でも、生徒が快適に行き来できます。
これからのことをお伝えできるのはうれしいことですが、それ以上に、この拡張がこれからの数年で子どもたちにどんな可能性をひらいてくれるのか、私自身とても楽しみにしています。KISに寄せてくださる信頼に、あらためて感謝申し上げます。

A Major Campus Expansion Begins This Summer
We have some exciting news about the future of Kumamoto International School. Later this summer, construction will begin on a major expansion of our campus. The new facilities are scheduled for completion in December 2027.
Our journey began in 2003, in downtown Kumamoto, when we opened Picasso Preschool. In 2006 we moved to Nishibaru, and it was there that the school found its footing and grew. In 2018 we opened our Primary School. Junior High followed in 2023, the same year we made our major move to the Toshima campus. In 2025 we welcomed our first high school students into the IB Diploma Programme, and this April we opened a boarding residence for Grades 10 to 12. Through all of that growth, one thing has not changed: our commitment to giving students an outstanding international education.
None of this would have been possible without the trust our families place in us. Every step we have taken has been possible because parents chose KIS and kept supporting the school as it grew. We are incredibly grateful for that.
Over the years, I have been struck by how directly our facilities shape the quality of education we can provide. Better spaces let our teachers do more in a lesson, and let us get more out of every school day. And the larger our physical space becomes, the more we can do for students. When we completed the Arena in the summer of 2024, a year after the Toshima move, it changed what was possible almost overnight. We built it with a 12.5-meter ceiling so that a volleyball rally would never be cut short by a ball clipping the roof. I still smile every time I watch a ball sail up toward that ceiling and the game just keeps going. Even a choice as simple as adding air conditioning and heating has been instrumental — it lets us use the space in any weather, for PE, for parent and school events, and for university visits. We use the Arena every single day now, often in ways we never expected, and today it is impossible to picture KIS without it.
This next step will be another sea change in what we can offer students. It will let us do things we simply cannot do today — starting with hot, fresh lunches cooked on campus every day, something we have wanted for our students for a long time. It will give them a dedicated athletic field and a testing center built for the demands of formal exams. And for parents, it brings a real, practical gain: the new parking area connects directly to Kokutai-dōro, which will make access far easier than it is now.
The expansion will include:
- A larger campus — nearly 10,000㎡ (3,000坪) in total, with much more room for learning, recreation, and future growth.
- A new cafeteria and onsite kitchen, so we can prepare fresh, hot lunches on campus every day.
- An athletic field for soccer, PE, recess, and outdoor play.
- More outdoor seating for our Junior High and High School students to enjoy lunch and spend time together.
- A dedicated room for examinations and assessments.
- A new parking area with direct access to Kokutai-dōro, improving traffic flow and access.
- A fully enclosed walkway connecting the new building to our main building, so students can move between the two comfortably in any weather.
